There is no doubt that an immediate image comes to mind when the phrase, “Influential Latin woman” is said. There are several actresses, singers and athletes who have a big impact on society not only through their talent, but also through charitable and philanthropic work. There are also several other Latin women in other arenas who have been very important in the world today.
Who is today’s mujer Latina? She is confident, driven and empowering. She is someone who girls look up to and strive to be like. Let’s take a look at a few examples.
Salma Hayek– born and raised in Mexico, Hayek became a well known actress in her home country. She moved to the United States in 1991 attempting to break out in American movies, landing a role in “Desperado” in 1995. With no big box office movie after that, she kept working hard until she was able to star in and co-produce a movie, “Frida” in 2002, about Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, whom Hayek has admired. Since that break out role, Hayek has been non-stop in her continued success.
Penelope Cruz– Penelope Cruz, born in Spain, has had the privilege of working alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest leading men. She has co-starred with Johnny Depp, Nicolas Cage, Matt Damon and Tom Cruise. She has managed to pave her way in Hollywood, not allowing anyone to outshine her in her efforts.
Jennifer Lopez– born to Puerto Rican parents, Jennifer Lopez grew up in the Bronx, NY. When she realized that she wanted to be an actress/musician, she decided she had to work hard for it. With a job as a back up singer in a Janet Jackson video and several small acting roles, Lopez didn’t give up. She starred with Robin Williams in “Jack” in 1996, but it was just a taste of things to come. Finally, in 1997, she landed the lead role in “Selena”. That was the unofficial beginning of the ladder of success. In June 1999, “On the 6”, her first album was released, earning her a Grammy nomination and 2 Latin Grammy nominations. Several movies-some good and some bad-, six albums, two clothing lines, two perfumes, a few marriages and a set of twins later and Jennifer Lopez is one of the most successful Latin women in entertainment today.
Shakira– born in Colombia, Shakira started writing songs at an early age. When she was just 14, she released her first album in Colombia, and while it did well in her home country, it did not catch on internationally. The same was true for her second album, which led her to take an acting job in a Colombian soap opera. In 2001, Shakira released her first English album, “Laundry Service”, which sold over 13 million copies, launching her international success. A live album, a remix album, six more studio albums and NBC’s “The Voice”‘s newest judge, Shakira shows young girls why you should never give up on your dreams.
